France bans public gatherings in Marseille after weekend unrest and looting

French authorities have banned public gatherings and demonstrations in Marseille following a weekend of unrest, violent clashes and looting linked to nationwide protests over the rising cost of living.

The ban, issued by local police, prohibits public gatherings and demonstrations between 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Monday as authorities move to strengthen security in France’s second-largest city.

The restriction comes ahead of a visit by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who is expected to review security measures following criticism from Marseille’s municipal government over the police response to Saturday’s demonstrations.

The unrest comes amid growing public anger over rising inflation, increasing energy costs and declining purchasing power. Protests across several French cities reportedly escalated into violent confrontations between demonstrators and security personnel, with incidents of arson and commercial looting.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said more than 1,200 people had been arrested nationwide, while at least 150 law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the clashes.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for urgent security measures to restore public order as authorities respond to the escalating unrest.

The ban in Marseille forms part of efforts to contain further disturbances as officials assess the security situation following the weekend violence.
